Twenty-five scholars from across the country visited University of Wisconsin–Madison campus the week of June 13 for the 7th annual Health Equity Leadership Institute (HELI), an intensive week-long “research boot camp” for investigators, particularly from underrepresented communities, doing research on health disparities and health equity.
Photos above and below: Scholars participate in an activity called “Culture Box” during the “Cultural Awareness in Mentoring Relationships” session. During the small group activity, scholars reflect on themselves as cultural beings by sharing the importance of meaningful objects they brought with them.
During the institute, attendees participated in two NRMN modules developed by the NRMN Mentor Training Core:

We are all cultural beings. In this workshop, we will introduce and address diversity issues in science with a focus on fixing environments and systems through a series of small steps that individuals take in their mentoring relationships. HELI Scholars will be asked to reflect on and discuss their own racial and ethnic identity and will work collaboratively to explore strategies to address race and ethnicity in their mentoring relationships, both as a mentor and as a mentee.
Work-Life Integration & Leadership
A National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) Module

This session will focus on personal growth and leadership, personal values, and the concept of life/work integration. Attention to life/work “integration” rather than “balance” addresses aligning goals across all aspects of life rather thanpitting them against each other. This session will also highlight the importance of your own personal health and wellness as a priority for success. The learning objectives, content and activities are primarily based on the book, Total Leadership: Be a Better Leader, Have a Richer Life by Steward D. Friedman (Harvard Business Press. 2008).
HELI is hosted by the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research’s Collaborative Center for Health Equity (CCHE) in partnership with the Maryland Center for Health Equity in the University of Maryland School of Public Health. – See more at: http://news.wisc.edu/leadership-institute-aims-to-help-researchers-target-health-disparities/ and https://uwheli.com.
