The National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) is a nationwide consortium of science investigators, professionals and institutions collaborating to provide students and scientists across all career stages of biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social science research with mentorship, networking, professional development and research resources in support of their advancement in the sciences. As a key component of the NIH’s Diversity Program Consortium, NRMN’s mission is to support greater diversity within the NIH-funded workforce by implementing programming based on curriculum that evidence suggests will affect persistence and success in a career in the sciences.
NRMN’s wide range of free mentorship and professional development programming includes:
- The NRMNet MyMentor – the guided virtual mentoring platform, which pairs mentors and mentees from around the nation, centering around weekly discussion topics that emphasize diversity, inclusivity, and culture.
- Intensive grantwriting coaching groups for both grant proposal writing basics (for those with limited experience with proposal submission) and advanced proposal tactics (for those with substantial experience working on a proposal submission or resubmission).
- Opportunity to be a grantsmanship coach or scientific/ methodology advisor to provide guidance to mentees within a grant writing coaching group.
- Evidence-based training workshops on maximizing the effectiveness of mentorships as a mentor or a mentee, including programs for certifications such as “NRMN Master Mentor.”
- Training on facilitating and implementing your own mentorship training program at your institution.
- Mentor certifications to formally recognize research mentors who have demonstrated certain key skills and experience with respect to mentorship. Mentors can be recognized as an NRMN Mentor, NRMN Certified Mentor, or NRMN Master Mentor depending on the depth of their qualifications.
- The MyNRMN mentorship networking platform, a powerful social networking platform for students and researchers to connect with one another for anything from general questions about research and professional development as a scientist to scheduling more formal mentorship appointments one-on- one or as a group.
