FAQs

Mentors who participate in at least one cycle of mentorship with a mentee will receive an “NRMN Mentor” credential in recognition of completion, and are eligible to apply for additional recognition as an “NRMN Certified Mentor” or “NRMN Master Mentor.” Learn more about these NRMN Mentor Certifications.

Who can participate?

Postdocs, junior faculty, senior faculty, non-faculty researchers, and academic administrators may serve as mentors.

Undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs may serve as mentees.

How do mentors and mentees connect?

Mentees and mentors create profiles on the virtual mentoring platform in response to questions about themselves and about their preferred match.  Mentees are recommended mentors based on the compatibility of their profiles and may invite one mentor at a time.  Once the mentor accepts, their guided virtual mentorship begins.  The pair communicate weekly by any convenient method (video chat, phone, email, etc.).  NRMN sends suggested topics by email to help spark discussion.

How long is a virtual mentorship?

Guided mentorships last four months, and pairs typically communicate 20-30 minutes per week during their mentorship.

What happens at the end of the four months?

Mentees can invite their current mentor to begin another four-month mentorship or invite a new mentor from their current recommendations.

Does NRMN guarantee my mentor or mentee will be a perfect match?

Mentors and mentees within NRMN are only human. Therefore, while Guided Virtual Mentorship uses an algorithm designed to help you find a ‘good fit’ for a mentorship partner, NRMN cannot guarantee that you will discover a ‘perfect match.’ We recommend that mentees engage in the program several times in order to gain the benefit of perspectives from multiple mentors over time, as no one individual will be able to provide all the advice that you may need.
