The National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) was created to address the unmet need for greater diversity in the biomedical and biobehavioral research workforce. NRMN Steps Toward Academic Research (STAR) is one of four professional development-training programs that is committed to increasing the number of people from diverse backgrounds successfully obtaining NIH grants.

NRMN STAR Overview
Recognizing the difficulty for junior faculty and postdoctoral fellow to accept a summer-long fellowship which would require an extended absence from home and family, the NRMN STAR provides a yearlong schedule that accommodates the work and family schedules of the participants. The program provides a unique approach that combines on-site professional development and education with distance learning techniques that include online digital meetings, and “store and forward” technology.
