Advisory Role Descriptions
Accomplished researchers are sought to give scientific or methodology input to mentees (postdoctoral fellows, early-career faculty) who are preparing grant proposals as part of an NRMN Grant Writing Coaching Group. Advisors can engage at three different levels, based on the extent and type of guidance needed:
1. Scientific/Methodology Consultant
Typically, these individuals participate in a 1-2 hour phone consultation with an NRMN mentee to provide targeted advice about scientific questions, hypotheses, study design, or experimental approaches (methodology) for a specific research project.

2. Scientific/Methodology Coach
In a few instances, individuals are needed to provide more in-depth scientific input, over a more extended period of time, to an NRMN mentee actively preparing a grant proposal. These coaches will have familiarity with the investigator’s research area, enabling them to provide critical oral and written feedback on a project’s significance, innovation, research design, and methodologic approaches. Periodic review of written proposal drafts and discussions with the investigator occur over a 2-5 month period (duration depends on program). Their field-specific feedback complements the scientific writing and proposal design guidance provided by lead coaches in the NRMN grant writing coaching programs. If possible, scientific coaches are matched with a mentee in the same geographic region to facilitate interactions during the program and encourage future research collaborations and networking.

3. Proposal Reviewer
Individuals receive a nearly complete draft of an NRMN mentees’ grant proposal (usually NIH K or R award) to review. They provide written feedback using the standard NIH-reviewer form, and participate in a virtual ‘mock study section’ led by lead coaches in the NRMN grant writing coaching programs. Proposals will fit with the reviewer’s general scientific and methodological expertise.
Application Instructions
To apply to work with NRMN mentees on the scientific/methodology contents of their NIH grant proposals, please follow the steps below.
Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. Applicants will be notified if they are accepted and placed into the database of contacts to be called upon when a mentee with a similar background is participating in an NRMN Grant Writing Coaching Group.
- Create an online profile at NRMNet.net by clicking here.
- You will be prompted to create a password and answer a set of basic questions to create your profile.
- When asked, “from which organization did you hear about NRMN?” please select “NRMN PDC – Professional Development Core” from the dropdown menu.
- Once you’ve completed your registration, you will see a notification that your NRMN Profile has been updated. You may then move on to Step 2.
