The NIH Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) met June 9 and 10. Included on the agenda was a presentation by Dr. Hannah Valantine, NIH Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity, on findings and recommendations of the NIH African American/Black Funding Disparity Working Group. In a related Science article, Jeffrey Mervis discusses NIH efforts to understand existing racial disparities. Only 1.5% of R01 applications come from African American/Black scientists, and disparities exist over multiple stages of the grant application and review process.
