NRMN Facilitating Entering Research Workshop

November 16-17, 2017

Workshop Overview:

In this two-day event, participants will learn about Entering Research, a mentee training curriculum designed for undergraduate and graduate trainees who are involved in a mentored research experience.

Participants will learn evidence-based approaches to mentee training and gain the knowledge, confidence, and facilitation skills needed to design and implement training at their institutions. Participants will build their own custom curriculum based on the needs of their trainees by selecting from over 90 activities that address a variety of areas of trainee development, including research skills, interpersonal skills, research attitudes and beliefs, cultural awareness and skills, and professional and career development skills.

Day 1: An Introduction to Research Mentee Training

November 16, 2017 | 8:00am – 4:30pm

Participants will:

  • Learn about the five areas of trainee development that serve as the framework for Entering Research and become familiar with the curriculum
  • Develop their facilitation skills and be able to articulate the difference between facilitating and teaching
  • Learn about workshop evaluation and trainee learning assessment tools that will be available to them
  • Begin to identify the areas of trainee development, the curricular materials, and evaluation and learning assessment tools that they would like to incorporate into mentee training at their home institution


Day 2: Designing and Implementing Research Mentee Training

November 17, 2017 | 8:00am – 4:30pm

Participants will:

  • Build their mentee training implementation curriculum by aligning the areas of trainee development, curricular materials, and evaluation and assessment tools they identified
  • Develop practical plans for implementing mentee training at their home institution
  • Identify challenges they may face in implementing at their home institution and strategies they could use to address them

Workshop Facilitators

Janet Branchaw – University of Wisconsin-Madison

Janet Branchaw, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, serves as the Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Science Education and Community Engagement (WISCIENCE) and the Associate Director of the National Research Mentoring Network’s Mentor Training Core. She has led several NSF-funded projects focused on undergraduate research experiences and authored the Entering Research and 2nd edition of the Entering Mentoring curricula. Her research focuses on the development and study of student and faculty development interventions designed to improve undergraduate STEM education.



Amber Smith, PhD – University of Wisconsin-Madison


Dr. Smith is the Director of Mentor and Mentee Training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an NRMN Master Facilitator. Dr. Smith holds degrees from Carroll College (BS, Biology) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (PhD, Plant Breeding Plant Genetics). She directs a Research Experience for Undergraduates summer research program and coordinates mentor and mentee training for UW-Madison. Dr. Smith has made significant contributions to the revised Entering Research curriculum.




Amanda Butz, PhD – University of Wisconsin – Madison


Amanda is an Associate Scientist in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Amanda received her PhD in Educational Psychology, where her research focused on academic motivation and self-efficacy. As a member of the NRMN Mentor Training Core, Amanda has facilitated several mentor training workshops and has helped to coordinate the revision and evaluation of the new Entering Research curriculum.
