Janet Branchaw, PhD – University of Wisconsin-Madison

Janet Branchaw, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology in the School of Education and the Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Science Education and Community Engagement (WISCIENCE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is Co-Director of the NIH-supported National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) Mentorship Training Core, where she leads a team of over 20 contributors from across the nation in developing, implementing, and evaluating an expanded and revised version of her published Entering Research curriculum for undergraduate and graduate research trainees. The new curriculum is organized around seven areas derived from the literature on research trainee development and includes activities focused on cultural awareness and skill development. Beyond developing the curriculum, her research team is developing and validating a new research trainee learning assessment instrument that incorporates a trainee self-assessment paired with a mentor assessment of trainee learning. She is also a Master Consultant for Entering Research. Master Consultants are curriculum experts who can provide individualized consultations on curriculum and implementation plans using the Entering Research curriculum.
In addition to her work on research trainee development, Dr. Branchaw is a co-author on the second edition of the Entering Mentoring curriculum and enjoys facilitating both mentor and trainee development workshops as an NRMN Master Facilitator. Dr. Branchaw directs an NSF-funded REU Site program and has led a project to develop a common assessment tool for use across NSF’s REU programs. Her scholarship focuses on the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative approaches to undergraduate science education, with a special emphasis on undergraduate research, assessment of student learning and broadening participation in science among underrepresented groups. Dr. Branchaw holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (PhD, MS) and Iowa State University (BS).
