Code of Conduct “Netiquette”
Before you hit SEND, check these golden rules:
1. Think before you write. Is your message relevant and appropriate?
2. Think after you write. Re-read your message. Is it clear, concise and (again) relevant? Off-topic comments are usually not a problem but then start a new subject (see 5 below).
3. Write clearly and in paragraphs (though 1-paragraph submissions are best): entire screens of text are off-putting. “White space” separates your ideas, makes it easier to quote selectively (see #7 below) and encourages recipients to read your message in full.
4. When you hit Reply, it does not only go back to the person you are replying to; remember that your reply will be visible to the public.
5. If you are referencing another message in your own, consider mentioning the exact subject title of that message so others are clear which one you are referring to.
6. Write for the lowest common denominator.
7. Break one of these rules rather than go against your COMMON SENSE – the best guide to (n)etiquette ever discovered.
