Michael Phillips and Betsy Friauf to present at Texas Oral History Association Meeting

Historian Michael Phillips, PhD, and Betsy Friauf, Senior Communications Specialist at UNT Health Science Center will be presenting a session based on this work at the annual meeting of the Texas Oral History Association.
Betsy Friauf will describe how “Texas’ alumni of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) view the ways in which their education helped them maintain integrity as African-Americans, while succeeding in the dominant white culture and how they worked to improve life for all African Americans.”
Michael Phillips will focus on how “Texas HBCUs, in spite of their conservative political and social orientation, inculcated W.E.B. du Bois’ concept of the “Talented Tenth”: the idea that the most educated, talented, and fortunate within the black community had a moral obligation to provide political leadership for the African American community, and to resist the temptation to accommodate a racist white power structure.”
The meeting will take place at Baylor University’s campus in Waco, TX on Saturday, April 23rd.
