NRMN May Professional Development Webinar

May 25, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

“Mentoring Trainees in Scientific Communication: Better, Faster, Simpler”

May 25th from 1-2 pm CDT

“Trainees don’t write enough; I don’t know how to get around that issue.”
“Teaching grammar! I am not an English major and this is hard. We need better basic education.”
“Some are afraid to open their mouth; they must have had bad experiences…”
“Some personalities are not receptive to changing their presentation style.”

If any of these sound familiar, you are invited to participate in a 1-hour webinar on why it’s important for trainees to develop scientific communication skills and how you can help your trainees develop them.

Research shows that mentors experience uncertainty and frustration in teaching scientific communication skills to their mentees. Importantly, the mentees’ attitudes about their own scientific communication skills also significantly impact their intentions to remain in research careers, independently of their attitudes about their science skills. This interactive session will discuss the three key modes of scientific communication—speaking, presenting, and writing—and surprisingly simple ways in which any mentor can start fostering them immediately.
