Thank Your Mentor

By April 26, 2021No Comments

This year has been like no other. Reflecting on this year, it’s all too easy to focus solely on the negative. However, the last goal within all MyMentor paths focuses on gratitude, specifically the mentee expressing gratitude to the mentor. This year I have learned so much from the actions of those in our network: since the beginning of 2020 the MyNRMN community has grown by 3,617 members; the NRMN Unconscious Bias Course has seen almost 700 people enroll since it launched in July; and our partnerships with institutions and organizations have continued to grow with increased engagement. From all of this I have learned not to give up. Whether you realized it or not, all of you have been like a collective mentor to me, so I want to follow Goal 19 in MyMentor and express my gratitude for you.

TASK 1: BE SPECIFIC

I am so thankful that I have heard from more of you this year and in the last 9 months than in my entire time with NRMN. Each of you is able to reach out to me at my direct email address (katie.stinson@unthsc.edu), the NRMN general email address (info@nrmnet.net), and by connecting with me in MyNRMN. Every day I log in and have messages from those in the MyNRMN community sharing feedback, requesting help, and even just saying hello. I live alone and have been isolating throughout the pandemic, so feeling that sense of connection with all of you has given me something to look forward to each day.

TASK 2: ACKNOWLEDGE RESULTS

NRMN’s guided virtual mentoring started in 2015 and has been going strong ever since that we have reached 1,171 completed mentoring connections in just 5 years! As I reflect on how the guided virtual mentoring started, it’s evolution to the first iteration of MyMentor, to how MyMentor exists now, I’m so proud and grateful that it has been so well received by all of you. We are going to continue working and improving upon MyMentor, as well as our other mentoring, networking, and career development resources. I’m personally and especially proud to see how our community continues to connect and grow as a result of all of the effort that has gone into making MyMentor what it is today.

TASK 3: BE GENUINE

I don’t think that I’m alone when I express that this has been an incredibly difficult year. I am so grateful that it’s almost over and even more grateful to all of you for helping me get through it, whether you realized the part you played or not. Even if we didn’t directly connect, you had an impact on the MyNRMN community and I sincerely hope we have the opportunity to connect in the future.

This year has been hard on us all. If someone has helped you get through this year, I encourage you to also reach out to them and express your gratitude. Even though we may have been physically separated this year, we got through it together. Thank you! 2021, we’re ready for you!
