How did you get involved with NRMN?

I got involved with NRMN as part of the Innovative Programs to Enhance Research Training (UPR-IPERT). Since then, I have been exploring all the tools and resources available in NRMN.

Which of NRMN’s program(s) have you participated in?

I’ve participated in MyMentor – Guided Virtual Mentoring and recently in group mentoring.

Describe your role in MyMentor and tell us a little about your experience in that role.

As a Mentor, I can connect with students interested or involved in research or following any of the career pathways related to my field of study. I’ve used the tools and resources on MyMentor to enhance my mentoring skills and reach more students.

Have you participated in other similar programs in the past?  If so, how was your experience with NRMN different or unique?

No, this is the first program of this kind I have participated in.

If someone called you and asked, “Why should I become involved with NRMN?” how would you respond?

When you get involved with NRMN, you can identify virtual mentors or mentees who can contribute to your academic and professional development. In addition, the resources you can find in NRMN are specifically designed to help you develop an exceptional mentor/mentee relationship.

How has your experience with NRMN changed the way you approach your career in the sciences?

The experience with NRMN has transformed my research practice, specifically the relationship between my research assistants and myself. I’ve been able to communicate better, reach out to them in more ways, and discuss issues that are important to them. I’ve been able to organize my time better and give them more options for creating a more significant mentor-mentee bond.

Describe a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.

A significant accomplishment in my career, so far, has been the participation in a project to introduce Computer Science in schools in Puerto Rico. Also, to be able to work with nonprofit organizations with research and community outreach.

What makes you an ideal mentor?

My life experiences have shown me that the best way to contribute to society is to serve, helping, and sharing my knowledge. As a mentor, I take advantage of my years of research experience to help students develop research skills and guide them through their academic and professional paths.

Each morning, what do you look most forward to in the day?

To be able to influence my students beyond getting a good grade in the class, that they have an exceptional learning experience, and a significant personal and academic development.

Is there anything you’d like to share about yourself with a potential future mentee?

I am very passionate about research. Even though my main focus in research is in the educational area, for the last 6 years I have been exposed to research experiences with various initiatives and projects funded by the federal government that impact communities in Puerto Rico. I take pride in my work and dedication for my students, and as a mentee you will get my full commitment on working with you step by step until you reach your goals and excel.

What is your current position and what is your favorite aspect of it?

I currently work as a Research Assistant. This position provides me with various alternatives to approach research and to involve students in the different stages of an investigation. I can also mentor undergrad students with an interdisciplinary focus.

Anything else that you would like to share?

I’m looking forward to creating new connections and share with others my experiences and knowledge.
